Weymouth, Dorset — The Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Caroline Nickinson, has announced plans for a community fundraiser in support of Weldmar Hospicecare, underscoring the town’s ongoing commitment to local charitable causes.

The event, scheduled for Friday 10 April at Weymouth’s Centenary Club, will see residents invited to a 60s and 70s-themed disco complete with music, a raffle and optional fancy dress, with prizes awarded for the best retro outfits. Ticket sales and all proceeds from the evening will go directly to Weldmar, a Dorset-wide charity providing specialist end-of-life care and support for adults living with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

Tickets are priced at £10 and may be purchased through Weldmar’s official website, with local financial services firm Rathbones stepping in as sponsor for the event. The mayor’s office has also appealed for additional support from local businesses and organisations to donate prizes for the planned fundraising raffle.

“It is a worthwhile cause,” Cllr Nickinson said, urging residents to attend. “Weldmar supports so many of our residents in this town. By holding a fun, 60s and 70s themed disco, I hope to raise as much money as possible to go towards my chosen charity.”

Weldmar Hospicecare relies heavily on community support to fund its services. Only a fraction of its annual operating costs are met by public funding, with the majority — around £26,000 per day — raised through charitable giving and local fundraising activities.

Cllr Nickinson’s decision to champion Weldmar follows her election as Mayor in May 2025, where she announced that the hospice charity would be her chosen cause for the civic year.

The upcoming event is part of a broader local tradition of grassroots support for Weldmar. Across Dorset, individuals and community groups regularly organise events — from sponsored runs to festive activities — to help the charity meet rising demand for its services.
