Weymouth Town Council to Leave X Following Committee Decision
Weymouth Town Council has announced it will no longer use the social media platform X as part of its communications strategy, following a decision made by its Finance and Governance Committee.
In a statement released this afternoon, the Council said that X is “no longer considered to be the right platform to reach residents about the work of the Council.” The move reflects a broader trend among councils and public sector organisations, many of which have already stepped back from the platform in recent months.
The decision was agreed at a committee meeting held last night. While the Council will cease posting updates on X with immediate effect, it confirmed that residents will continue to receive news and information through its other established communication channels.
Weymouth Town Council will maintain an active presence on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube. Updates will also continue to be published on the Council’s official website.
The Council has not indicated whether it will permanently close its X account, but confirmed that it will no longer use the platform to communicate its work, services, and community updates.
Residents are encouraged to follow the Council on its remaining social media platforms or visit the website to stay informed about local news, events, and council initiatives.
Nicola Whitehead, Communications and Marketing Assistant at Weymouth Town Council, issued the statement on behalf of the authority.
For more information and regular updates, residents can visit the Council’s website or follow its official social media accounts.
