Knife Offender Sentenced as Dorset Police Step Up Efforts to Reduce Knife Crime.
A man from Dorchester has been sentenced to prison after being found in possession of a knife in a public place, as Dorset Police reiterates its commitment to tackling knife crime across the county.
On 19 February 2026, police officers stopped and searched 32-year-old Adrian Hurst in Dorchester, discovering a 7.9 cm Stanley blade in his pocket — a knife that is illegal to carry in public without good reason. Hurst was arrested and charged with possession of a blade or sharp pointed article in a public place.
Following his court appearance, Hurst pleaded guilty and was immediately sentenced to 12 months in prison. While the maximum available penalty for carrying a knife is four years’ imprisonment, courts consider individual circumstances when determining custodial terms.
Ongoing Commitment to Reducing Knife Crime
Detective Sergeant Kate Bleese emphasised that, even though Dorset generally records low rates of knife crime, the force remains vigilant and proactive in addressing the issue. Officers continue to take part in national campaigns, carry out enforcement operations, deliver educational presentations to local schools, and conduct test purchases to ensure retailers comply with knife-sale laws.
“Possessing a knife in a public place is unacceptable,” Sgt Bleese said. “We are pleased that this individual is now behind bars and facing the consequences of his actions.” She added that members of the public with concerns about knife carrying should report information either directly to Dorset Police or anonymously through CrimeStoppers UK.
Community Safety and Reporting
The police have reiterated that community intelligence plays an important role in preventing violent crime. Anyone with information about knife offences or other serious incidents is encouraged to contact Dorset Police via their official website or by calling 101. Anonymous reports can be made to CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.
