Amber Wildfire Alert Issued Across Dorset and Wiltshire Amid Dry Conditions

Residents across Dorset and Wiltshire are being urged to stay vigilant after an Amber Wildfire Alert was issued by Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service due to increasingly dry conditions across the region.

The alert warns that if a wildfire starts, it could spread rapidly and become difficult to control. Areas considered most at risk include heathlands, open countryside, agricultural fields and coastal cliff areas where vegetation has become dry after recent warm weather.

Fire crews are reminding the public that even a small spark from disposable barbecues, discarded cigarettes, campfires or deliberate fire-setting can quickly escalate into a major incident.

Emergency services are advising people to take extra care when visiting the countryside and open spaces during the current conditions.

What To Do If You Discover a Wildfire

Members of the public are being urged to follow important safety advice if they spot a fire:

  • Keep a safe distance and never attempt to tackle the fire yourself
  • Call 999 immediately and ask for the fire service
  • Give the exact location of the fire — if needed, use the what3words app to help emergency crews find it quickly

Authorities are also encouraging residents to report suspicious behaviour linked to deliberate fires.

Anyone with information can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Officials say preventing wildfires is a community effort and are urging people to help protect local wildlife, homes and countryside during the heightened risk period.

More information about countryside and wildfire safety can be found on the official Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service website.
