Weymouth Celebrates as Four Parks and Gardens Earn Prestigious Green Flag Awards
Four of Weymouth’s most popular parks and gardens are set to proudly fly the internationally recognised Green Flag Award after being recognised for their outstanding quality and management.
Weymouth Town Council has announced that The Nothe Gardens has secured the prestigious accolade for the first time, joining Greenhill Gardens, Sandsfoot Gardens and Radipole Park and Gardens, which have all successfully retained their Green Flag status for another year.
The achievement comes as the Green Flag Award celebrates its 30th anniversary, with a record-breaking 2,391 parks and green spaces across the UK receiving the honour in 2026.
The awards recognise the dedication of Weymouth Town Council’s Greenspaces Team and the many volunteers who work throughout the year to maintain the town’s parks and gardens to an exceptional standard, ensuring they remain welcoming and enjoyable for both residents and visitors.
The Mayor of Weymouth, Councillor David Harris, praised the commitment of the council’s skilled gardeners and the volunteer groups whose efforts have helped secure the four awards.
He said: “It is wonderful to see that the Nothe Gardens will now join Greenhill Gardens, Sandsfoot Gardens and Radipole Park and Gardens in being awarded the Green Flag. This is such a fantastic achievement, and testament to the efforts of our highly skilled gardeners and dedicated members of the Friends’ Groups, whose hard work behind the scenes have played a huge role in securing four Green Flags.
“I would highly recommend paying a visit to each of our greenspaces, where you can really admire and enjoy the flower beds and planting schemes, which come into their own at this time of year.”
The council also recognised the important contribution made by local volunteer organisations, including the Friends of Greenhill Gardens, the Friends of the Rodwell Trail and Sandsfoot Castle, and the Friends of Radipole Park and Gardens. Their ongoing work helps keep the spaces vibrant while organising events and activities for the community to enjoy.
Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Manager at Keep Britain Tidy, highlighted the wider importance of high-quality public parks.
He said: “Parks are essential public spaces that support our wellbeing, our communities and our economy.
“With public services under pressure, investing in parks is not a luxury, it’s a practical, preventative solution and one of the most visible ways to improve people’s quality of life.
“Weymouth Town Council have shown what can be achieved when parks are properly supported and managed. As we celebrate 30 years of the Green Flag Award, we want every community to have access to green spaces like this that are safe, welcoming and maintained to a high standard.

The Green Flag Award, managed by Keep Britain Tidy on behalf of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, is regarded as the international benchmark for well-managed parks and green spaces.
With four Green Flags now flying across the town, Weymouth continues to demonstrate its commitment to maintaining beautiful, accessible outdoor spaces that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike throughout the year.
