A family has spoken of their shock and distress after discovering they had allegedly been labelled “depressed fucks” on a receipt following a wake held at a local pub.

The incident took place at The Crossroads Poundbury, where relatives had gathered to remember a loved one. According to a post shared by a family member on Facebook, the family noticed the offensive wording when they were reviewing the bill.

The wake had been arranged as a quiet gathering for close friends and family. One relative, who posted about the incident online, said the discovery left them “absolutely horrified.”

“We were already dealing with one of the hardest days of our lives,” the family member wrote. “To then see ourselves described in such an appalling way on the receipt was beyond upsetting.”

A photograph of the receipt was shared alongside the post, quickly drawing widespread attention and sparking anger from members of the local community. Many described the wording as “disgusting,” “heartless,” and “completely unacceptable,” particularly given the circumstances of a funeral wake.

In response to the growing backlash, The Crossroads Poundbury issued a public statement on its Facebook page.

In the statement, the business owner said:

“ Public Notice
I want to address the recent post regarding an incident at Crossroads.


I was away this weekend and immediately cut my trip short as soon as became aware of the situation. I am now back and dealing with this personally.

Following a full internal review, I confirm that the incident involved a member of staff and, regrettably, the complaint is valid. I want to offer my sincere apologies to the family affected. The circumstances in which this occurred make it even more upsetting, and I am truly sorry.

A full refund has already been issued. The staff member involved has been suspended pending further action, and I have requested a formal written apology from them.

As a small, family-run business, we take pride in treating every customer with respect and compassion. This behaviour does not reflect our values, nor the standard of service we work hard to uphold. Please be assured we are taking this incredibly seriously.

Once I have concluded the investigation and gathered all documentation, I will provide a further update. In the meantime, I appreciate the community’s patience while this is handled properly and responsibly.

The pub confirmed that a full refund had been issued and that the staff member responsible had been suspended pending further action.

Local residents have since taken to social media to express their views, with some calling for further accountability while others have urged the community to allow the investigation to run its course.

The family involved has not indicated whether they intend to pursue any further action but said they felt it was important to share their experience publicly.
