Around 400 people gathered in Victoria Square, Portland, this morning for a mass protest

Around 400 people gathered in Victoria Square, Portland, this morning for a mass protest organised by the Stop Portland Incinerator Campaign before marching together to the gates of Portland Port.

Protesters filled the square with banners, placards and chants calling for the proposed incinerator project to be halted, citing concerns over air quality, public health, and environmental impact on the local community and coastline. Families, local residents, environmental campaigners and representatives from community groups were among those in attendance, creating a visibly large and vocal presence on Portland.

During the gathering, Labour MP Lloyd Hatton addressed the crowd, voicing his support for residents’ concerns and urging decision-makers to listen to local people. In his speech, he emphasised the need for greater scrutiny of the project and more transparent consultation with the community.

Several local councillors also spoke, echoing worries about potential pollution, increased traffic, and the long-term implications of the incinerator for Portland’s environment and tourism. Speakers stressed the importance of sustainable alternatives to waste management rather than reliance on large-scale incineration.

After the speeches, demonstrators set off in a peaceful march from Victoria Square towards the gates of Portland Port, continuing their chants and holding banners aloft along the route. Marshals and organisers helped keep the procession orderly as it moved through the streets.

The Stop Portland Incinerator Campaign said the turnout showed strong local opposition to the plans and vowed to continue campaigning until the proposal is reconsidered or withdrawn. Campaigners are calling for further public meetings, independent environmental assessments, and a review of alternative waste strategies for the region.

No major disruptions or incidents were reported during the protest, which concluded with a final rally outside the port gates. Organisers described the morning as a “powerful display of community unity” against the incinerator plans.
