JAILED | Courage of Bournemouth rape survivor brings attacker to justice
The bravery of a young woman who was raped and sexually assaulted in her own home in Bournemouth has led to her attacker being convicted and jailed.
Her courage in coming forward and supporting a detailed police investigation resulted in 28-year-old Chret Courtney Callender being found guilty following a trial at Bournemouth Crown Court.
The Attack
On the night of Friday 13 June 2025, the victim, aged in her 20s, had seen Callender – who was known to her – while out in Bournemouth town centre. She later took a taxi home, while Callender remained out in town.
During the early hours of Saturday 14 June 2025, Callender arrived at the victim’s address. She allowed him inside, believing he would not stay for long.
Once inside the property, Callender began making sexual advances towards her. The victim made it clear she did not want any sexual contact to take place.
Despite this, Callender sexually assaulted and raped her, ignoring her lack of consent and clear objections.
Investigation and Support
The victim reported the offence to police later the same day. She was supported throughout the process by The Shores Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) and an Independent Sexual Violence Advisor (ISVA), who provided specialist care and guidance during the investigation and court proceedings.
Following a thorough investigation by detectives from BCP Criminal Investigation Department, Callender – a Trinidadian and Tobagonian national – was charged with the offences.
He denied the allegations, and the case proceeded to trial. The victim’s evidence played a crucial role in securing his conviction.
Sentence
Callender returned to Bournemouth Crown Court on Thursday 22 January 2026, where he was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment.
Police Statement
Detective Constable Samantha James, of Dorset Police, said:
“Chret Callender forced himself upon his victim despite her clear indications that she did not consent.
“Despite the horrific ordeal she faced at the hands of this defendant, she has shown the strength to come forward and report the matter as well as support the subsequent investigation, ensuring Callender faced justice for his offending and now finds himself behind bars.
“We are committed to doing all we can to tackle violence against women and girls and want to ensure victims have the confidence to come forward and report offences in the knowledge they will be fully supported and perpetrators such as Callender will face the consequences of their actions.”
