Security Guard Appears in Court Over Alleged Assault at Weymouth Store

A security guard employed by a national retailer in Weymouth town centre appeared at Weymouth Magistrates’ Court today charged with assault by beating following an incident involving a 15-year-old boy.

It is claimed that during this process, one of the youths — a 15-year-old — was assaulted by the security guard. The alleged victim states that he was subjected to unlawful physical force while being removed from the store.

The defendant, who has not been named for legal reasons, entered a plea of not guilty. Through his legal representative, the security guard told the court that he acted in self-defence. He claims that the alleged victim pushed him towards an escalator, causing him to fear for his own safety and forcing him to respond to protect himself.

The case has sparked discussion within the security industry, where professionals are often required to manage confrontational situations involving members of the public. Some industry figures have expressed concern that security staff could face criminal charges while carrying out their duties if physical intervention is later challenged.

Magistrates set a trial date for 1 July 2026. No verdict has been reached, and the defendant remains innocent unless proven guilty.
