Youth Detained After Allegedly Harming Wildlife in Weymouth Cemetery

At around 17:30 22nd January, an off-duty police officer alerted the local neighbourhood policing team after observing youths allegedly shooting at wildlife in the trees at Weymouth Cemetery, off Abbotsbury Road.

Responding promptly, the team, accompanied by the off-duty officer, located two youths at the scene. Officers witnessed one of the youths hitting a pigeon roosting in a tree. Upon seeing police, both individuals fled the area, prompting a foot chase. Officers successfully detained one of the suspects near the marsh.

A catapult believed to have been used in the incident was recovered nearby.

The neighbourhood team has confirmed that they will be investigating the offence thoroughly and intend to prosecute anyone responsible. Authorities emphasized that harming animals is “needlessly cruel” and warned that action will be taken against offenders.

Police officers involved in the operation included PC2770 and PC0949.

Residents are reminded to report any suspicious activity involving wildlife or criminal behaviour to their local police.
