Students offered antibiotics after meningitis B cases confirmed in Weymouth

Students from schools across Weymouth are today being offered antibiotics and vaccinations following confirmed cases of meningitis B, health officials have said.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed three cases in total — two linked to Budmouth Academy and one at Wey Valley School.

As a precautionary measure, all pupils in years 7 to 13 across Weymouth, Portland and Chickerell are being offered a course of antibiotics along with the MenB vaccination.

Today, students from both Budmouth Academy and Wey Valley School have been attending Budmouth Academy to collect their medication as part of the coordinated public health response.

Officials say the move is precautionary and aimed at preventing any further spread of the infection. Meningitis B is a serious bacterial infection that can develop quickly, but early treatment and vaccination significantly reduce the risk.

Alternative days are being planned for other local schools.

Our roaming reporter, Jake Brewer, was at Budmouth Academy earlier today. He approached a site manager at the school for comment, but they declined to speak.

Parents and students have been advised to remain vigilant for symptoms, which can include fever, headache, sensitivity to light, and a stiff neck. Anyone concerned is urged to seek medical advice promptly.

The UKHSA says it is continuing to monitor the situation closely and is working with local schools and health services to ensure all eligible students receive treatment as quickly as possible.
