Weymouth’s summer season of traditional fireworks will come to a spectacular end on Bank Holiday Monday, with thousands expected to gather along the seafront for the final display of the summer.

The fireworks will take place on Monday, 31 August, with the display scheduled to begin at 9.30pm.

The fireworks will be launched from a boat moored out in Weymouth Bay, meaning the display can be seen from a large stretch of the seafront — from The Nothe through to Overcombe and Bowleaze.

Mayor of Weymouth, Councillor David Harris, said he was looking forward to joining crowds for the final countdown.

“The final firework display of the summer is planned to go ahead on Monday 31st August and I’m looking forward to seeing people for the countdown.”

He also thanked visitors for planning their journeys in advance and urged people to allow extra time when travelling to and from the town centre.

🎺 Entertainment begins earlier

There will be plenty happening along the seafront before the fireworks begin.

Weymouth Concert Brass will perform from 7pm in the charity stall area on the promenade.

At 8.30pm, visitors can enjoy a traditional Punch and Judy show on Weymouth Beach, while funfair rides will also be available on the beach and around the Jubilee Clock.

Several local organisations will also be present in the charity stall area, including Weymouth and Portland Lions Club, the RNLI Lifeboat Fundraising Team and the Pineapple Project, raising awareness of their work and supporting their causes.

🚗 Parking restrictions

Visitors are being encouraged to leave their cars at home where possible and instead walk, cycle or use public transport.

As with previous summer fireworks evenings, the Pavilion Forecourt and Pavilion Car Park behind the theatre will be closed between 6pm and 10pm to help reduce congestion.

All other town centre car parks will remain open as usual.

Dorset Council-operated car parks are also free after 6pm.

Organisers are asking people to consider car sharing where possible.

🚌 Extra buses planned

Additional late services will operate on several bus routes to help people get home after the fireworks.

The number 1 to Portland, number 2 serving Littlemoor and the Park and Ride, and number 4 to Preston via Overcombe will have an extra double-decker late service.

Children and young people aged 5 to 15 can also travel for free on buses during August under the Government’s Great British Summer Savings scheme.

🚲 Consider cycling

Visitors are also being encouraged to consider using the Beryl Bike rental scheme as a sustainable way of travelling to and from the event.

With the fireworks visible across much of Weymouth’s seafront, visitors do not necessarily need to head towards the busiest areas around the town centre to enjoy the display.
