Bin Collection Changes for 32,000 Homes Across Weymouth Area

Thousands of households across Weymouth and the surrounding areas will see changes to their waste and recycling collection days from 13 April as new bin routes are introduced.

Dorset Council has confirmed that around 32,000 homes in Weymouth, Portland, Chickerell and Osmington will be affected by the updates.

The changes follow a review of how waste collections are organised from the Weymouth depot and are designed to make the service more reliable and efficient as the local population grows.

Residents whose collection day is changing will receive a letter explaining the new arrangements and when the changes will begin. Households that do not receive a letter will keep their current collection day.

Some properties will move to a different collection day, while others will see no change. A number of households may also notice their bins being collected at a different time of day.

To help manage the transition, the council says some households will receive an additional “bridging” collection, while others will be allowed to place a small amount of side waste next to their bins. Details of which arrangement applies will be included in the letter sent to affected homes.

The redesigned routes have been tested using updated route-planning tools and data that take into account road layouts, access issues and the time it typically takes to service each street.

Jon Andrews, Cabinet Member for Place Services at Dorset Council, said:

“Every household affected by this will receive a letter from us over the next couple of weeks. Please look out for your letter – everything you need to know will be in it.

“Keeping our waste collections running smoothly is one of the most important things we do. By using better data and modern route-planning tools, we can make sure the service stays reliable for local people without needing extra vehicles or crews.

“These changes will help us keep collections efficient, resilient and ready for the future as Weymouth, Portland and surrounding areas continue to grow.”

Residents with questions about the changes will be able to contact the council for further support once letters have been delivered.
