Proposed Seafront Apartment Scheme Submitted for Weymouth Promenade
A new residential development comprising 50 two-bedroom apartments has been proposed for a prominent site along the Esplanade in Weymouth, Dorset, marking one of the more substantial regeneration opportunities on the town’s seafront in recent years.
The scheme, currently at pre-application stage, would see the redevelopment of an existing plot along the promenade to deliver a mixed-use building arranged across two primary blocks. The front block, rising to five storeys, would provide 35 apartments with direct sea views, alongside ground floor commercial units intended for café or retail use. A second, four-storey block positioned to the rear would accommodate a further 15 apartments.
Central to the design is a landscaped courtyard, providing private amenity space for residents while improving daylight penetration to the interior of the site. The courtyard is intended to act as a buffer between the two buildings, reducing perceived density and enhancing overall liveability.
The proposed development has been designed to respond to the architectural character of Weymouth’s historic seafront, with a continuous frontage along the promenade and active ground floor uses aimed at maintaining pedestrian engagement. The inclusion of commercial units at street level is expected to support local economic activity and reinforce the vibrancy of the Esplanade.
Vehicular access would be provided via a rear service road, where parking, cycle storage, and refuse facilities are located. This arrangement seeks to prioritise the pedestrian environment along the seafront while ensuring functional servicing to the development.
According to early design information, the apartments would be configured to meet national space standards, with open-plan living areas and private balconies for the majority of units. Upper-level apartments in the front block are anticipated to achieve premium values due to uninterrupted coastal views.
While the proposal is at an early stage, it is expected that key planning considerations will include the scale and massing of the development, its visual impact on the conservation area, and flood risk mitigation measures given the site’s proximity to the shoreline.
If progressed, the scheme could contribute to the ongoing evolution of Weymouth’s seafront, balancing residential demand with the preservation of the town’s distinctive coastal character.
