UPDATE: No third-party involvement found in North Dorset death investigation
Detectives have concluded their investigation into the death of a 23-year-old man whose body was discovered in North Dorset earlier this year.
Emergency services were called to Newton Hill, near Sturminster Newton, at approximately 12.45pm on Saturday 24 May 2025, where the body of a man was located. He was later formally identified as a local man who had been reported missing after last being seen in the area of Station Road at around 3am on Saturday 17 May 2025.
A full investigation was launched by detectives to establish the circumstances surrounding the death. As part of those enquiries, a man in his 30s from Blandford was arrested on suspicion of murder. He was subsequently released under investigation while officers carried out further work.
Police said the arrest was made to assist investigators in obtaining as much information as possible, while also providing legal protection to the individual involved during the early stages of the investigation.
Following extensive enquiries, including detailed toxicological and pathological examinations, detectives have now confirmed that there is no evidence to suggest any third-party involvement in the death. The man who had been arrested has been released from under investigation and will face no further police action.
Officers confirmed that the deceased man’s family has been kept fully informed throughout the investigation. Police added that their thoughts remain with the family during what continues to be a difficult time.
The case will now proceed to inquest proceedings, and detectives will continue to assist HM Coroner as required.
